Community Reinforcement & Family Training (CRAFT)

Caring for a young person who is struggling with substance use can be overwhelming, isolating, and emotionally exhausting. Community Reinforcement and Family Training (CRAFT) is a compassionate, evidence-based approach that helps families support change without confrontation, guilt, or ultimatums. Instead of focusing on control, CRAFT focuses on connection—strengthening communication, reducing conflict, and increasing the likelihood that your adolescent or young adult child will choose healthier behaviors and seek treatment when they are ready.

Through CRAFT coaching, we work with you (not the young person) to identify what’s working, what’s not, and how to shift patterns in practical, achievable steps. Together, we will clarify your goals, understand the function of your loved one’s substance use, learn how to respond to challenging situations with calm and consistency, and begin reinforcing the moments of health, openness, and safety—however small—they are already showing.

What to Expect in CRAFT Coaching:

  • Personalized guidance grounded in adolescent development and addiction medicine

  • Tools to communicate in ways that lower defensiveness and increase trust

  • Strategies to support positive behavior change around substance use

  • Help navigating when to step in, when to step back, and how to maintain boundaries

  • A structured, nonjudgmental space focused on your well-being, too

CRAFT is not about waiting helplessly or forcing change. It is about learning skills that support your adolescent’s growth, while also restoring your own clarity, stability, and hope.
